If the planets align properly, using a ballistic insertion burn from 100km, with proper aerobraking, a round trip from Kerbin to orbit around Duna and back requires ~1700 m/s of LKO delta-v, a relatively low amount compared to other interplanetary destinations. Duna has a very thin atmosphere and low gravity, this means that although parachutes work, you will need about 3 times more of them than you would need on kerbin. I would suggest firing your engines to slow down for the last few seconds just to protect your legs and engines, less that 10m/s is a good landing speed. Share your thoughts, experiences and the tales behind the art. Done in KSP version 0.18.0 Inline ballutes for upper atmosphere aerobraking. Contribute to enceos/InlineBallutes development by creating an account on GitHub. I don't know about Duna, but I successfully landed on Kerbin with some sensitive equipment and without a heat shield, by using a couple drogue parachutes, reducing speed by very gentle aerobraking (multiple passes through upper atmosphere) and then deploying normal parachutes after slowing down to <1000m/s without ever entering the "flaming" phase.
If you use the pre-aerobraking periapsis, the output orbit will be somewhat less energetic than predicted (lower apoapsis), but I think this is mostly due to the slight reduction in periapsis that occurs at the front end of the aerobraking pass. Mission to Duna – “Podkayne” – Mission report.
Finally, we enter the sphere of influence of the red planet after a long voyage, some preparations are made to stabilize the ship against the stresses of aer
Just make sure to burn/brake hard enough to stay in duna sphere of influence (SoI) which requires roughly 300m/s delta-V from low PE. Example: Two burns, 300m/s to stay in SoI, then 350m/s to circularize. 1.4m members in the KerbalSpaceProgram community.
hehe btw yesterday I got carried away and I have now almost completed the next patch of the Pluron-Khato system.Since I havent received any feedback about the names I will keep them as they are, but Im still looking to change them.New features will include:- barycenter mass fix- pluron and khato
The spacraft soon passed its original 12.7 km periapsis and was still losing altitude. Was it going too steep? I am trying to get back from Duna most efficiently and I was, of course, looking into aerobreaking on Kerbin. I am currently moving very, very quickly around the sun relative to Kerbin and Should hit the atmosphere at a few km/s speed. I have never doen arobraking before in KSP, and I want to know if thier is any way to calculate how deep to get into the atmosphere, without falling to the planets surface. Finishing off the Duna mission (for now), I do a couple aerobrakes in it's thin atmosphere and then go in for a landing. Thanks for watching! The intro music i

And now aerobraking with tiny circularization (because you need to lift PE from atmosphere to … About halfway make a correction to get a low Duna periapsis and brake there (or put it in atmosphere and aerobrake). Using mods requires Module Manager. Periapsis after Aerobrake.
The Clarke maneuver is definitely aerocapture, not aerobraking. I suspect the Hienlein one too, but I have no copy of Space Cadet. Probing Duna, Minmus, and the Mun We took on a contract to explore Duna, but realized we didn't have the tech to send a manned mission. So probes it is! This is more or less our Mun flyby rocket with an unmanned stage armed with a heat shield and parachutes.
- 2763+339 = 3102 m/s required for Duna orbit circularization, leaving 1825 m/s (some can be saved here via aerobraking) - approximate delta-v required for Ike polar transfer is 600 m/s You may check the "No insertion burn" checkbox instead if you intend to perform a fly-by or aerobraking maneuver. After trying it out a few times on Duna and Kerbin, I can say for sure that that formula works.
